Walter Smith III (born 1980) is an American saxophonist, composer and Chair of the Woodwind Department at Berklee College of Music.Walter Smith III
Smith grew up in Houston and showed a high proficiency for the saxophone at a young age, receiving several scholarships and fellowships. He has played with many jazz notables and next generation players alike. His debut album “Casually Introducing” in 2006 saw him joined by Robert Glasper and fellow Houston native Kendrick Scott among others. Since 2018 Smith has co-led the acclaimed project In Common with Matt Stevens, which has also featured Dave Holland and Terri Lyne Carrington. His debut album for Blue Note “Return To Casual” sees him revisit the same core band as his debut album and brings Smith’s development as a player and composer full circle.
