Forming his famous Quartet as early as 1951, it rose to fame by the end of the decade, featuring saxophonist Paul Desmond, bassist Eugene Wright and drummer Joe Morello. The Dave Brubeck Quartet released the first jazz album to sell more than one million copies, “Time Out” (1959), containing the iconic song “Take Five”. Brubeck’s composition style fused elements of classical and jazz, resulting in a so-called third stream, utilizing atonality, improvisation, unorthodox time signatures, and complex rhythms. Brubeck continued releasing music until his death in 2012.
