That was some great music we made at both those sessions and I’m really proud of it today, Miles Davis wrote in 1989 about the sessions for “Relaxin'.” It opens with Davis in typically mercurial form as he tells the control room “I’ll play it and tell you what it is later” before launching into a graceful take on “If I Were a Bell.” In that moment, a song from the hit 1950 musical “Guys and Dolls” was reborn as a jazz standard. “Relaxin' with the Miles Davis Quintet” is one of the four albums that came out of the two legendary 1956 sessions held at the Rudy Van Gelder Studio in Hackensack, NJ.
