Pianist Robert Glasper’s second Blue Note album reunites him with bassist Vicente Archer and drummer Damion Reid for an assured update of the jazz piano trio. There’s a wide variety of moods on offer; from the gorgeously hushed and slow-moving ballad “Tribute,” through the frenetic, quicksilver interplay of “G & B,” to the sweeping melodicism of “Of Dreams To Come.” While Glasper’s virtuosity is firmly rooted in the tradition of past masters, he’s also not afraid to take daring risks – as on his wildly imaginative medley interweaving Herbie Hancock’s classic “Maiden Voyage” with Radiohead’s “Everything In Its Right Place.”
