On this essential 1965 album, Nina Simone turns her attention to a dozen dramatic and soulful interpretations of tunes by others, embellished by lush strings and brassy horns. At the more bluesy end, the album contains two of her most famous and powerful performances; in her version of Screamin' Jay Hawkins' title track and the timeless "Feeling Good." She also touches on chanson with a heart-breaking rendition of Jacque Brel's "Ne me quitte pas," and reminds us of her understated skills as a pianist on the slinky instrumental jazz swing of "Blues On Purpose."
