Recorded in one session at Rudy Van Gelder’s famous New Jersey studio, Sonny Rollins’ first recording for the Impulse! label finds him tackling five standards with gusto, aided by the very competent band of pianist Ray Bryant, bassist Walter Booker and drummer Mickey Roker. While label-mates and contemporaries were dabbling in the avant-garde in the mid-60s, here Rollins blasts his way through a couple of tough hard bop swingers, a pair of ballads and a calypso, revealing his quicksilver imagination and bottomless melodic reserves.
Verve’s Acoustic Sounds Series features transfers from analog tapes and remastered 180-gram vinyl in deluxe gatefold packaging.
