“Saxophone Colossus” is the sixth studio album by Sonny Rollins and perhaps his best-known album. The infectious, calypso based opener “St Thomas” is an instant ear worm featuring a wonderfully melodic drum solo from Max Roach. Rollins’ full throated tenor sound brings pathos to the Great American Songbook classic “You Don’t Know What Love Is,” and the self penned final track “Blue 7” is a masterclass in improvisation. “Saxophone Colossus” fully deserves its place in the National Library of Congress’ National Recording Registry.
