Sons Of Kemet’s third album is where they really hit their stride. A searing investigation into white patriarchy embodied in British Royal and political institutions, and the rampant, systemic racism they represent, it pulls no punches, with poet/rapper Joshua Idehen spitting incendiary bars on the lingering 21st century evils of colonialism and oppression. There’s a harder edge to the music than on previous releases, borrowing the urgency of grime and the expansiveness of dub reggae – yet it remains as joyously upbeat as ever, packing in dancefloor grooves touching on soca, South African township jive and other African diasporic rhythms.
